    BIO

Caroline is a local food-systems consultant and a specialist in values-based food procurement.

She leads Research and Food System Analysis at New Venture Advisors (NVA), a national food business strategy firm specializing in local food system infrastructure and food policy development. Before joining New Venture Advisors as a consultant, she spent eight years in non-profit communications, media relations, and fundraising for mission driven organizations and international NGOs. She also worked in rural Montana to develop a farm-to-school program that addressed food insecurity and food access. As a farmer, she has worked on farms in Vermont, Montana, New York, and Massachusetts.

Her graduate thesis focused on connecting local producers to wholesale markets in traditionally underserved communities in Western Massachusetts. Most recently, she was the Director of Farm to Fork initiatives at ag-tech start-up ripe.io, a blockchain-based platform providing traceability of produce from farm to plate.

Currently, Caroline leads market research, local food system analyses and food center feasibility studies for NVA. Her projects have spanned the U.S. from Texas to Virginia to the Oneida Nation in Wisconsin.

Caroline has an M.S. in Sustainability Science with a concentration in Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst and a B.A. in Environmental Policy from Barnard College, Columbia University. She lives in Upstate NY on a small five-acre farm with her husband and three daughters.

    Hello,

I'm a farming, local food and data enthusiast. In 2022, my family moved to a small five acre farm in rural upstate New York where we promptly (and naively) planted 20+ fruit trees and started a very large vegetable patch all while trying to raise our three girls, ages 3 to 19..and are now trying to keep up with all of our current projects. I work remotely from our home in Schoharie County through my firm Wild Tomato Consulting and for New Venture Advisors and am passionate about fostering vibrant and equitable regional food systems and strengthening rural economies through local food infrastructure. This is the bulk of where my work has taken me the last seven years consulting and conducting research for municipalities, non-profits, and food policy councils. I also have experience in agricultural technical assistance; designing equitable and meaningful community engagement; value chain coordination; analyzing and assessing local food systems; and providing strategic planning assistance to non-profits.

Other, supporting roles include: backyard chicken raiser, home-farmer, coyote chaser, and toddler wrangler.

At Wild Tomato, I am always open to working on meaningful, data-driven projects, even if it is not food or ag related - but especially if it is (!), drop me a line and let's collaborate! Particularly interested in New York State-based projects.
